弘(hong)治十三(san)年(1500)嘗為唐(tang)寅作(zuo)《荷池(chi)消夏圖》圖錄于《藝林(lin)月刊》八十四期。傳(chuan)世作(zuo)品有《招仙圖》卷、弘(hong)治十四年(1501)作(zuo)《秋林(lin)高士圖》軸(有文(wen)徵(zhi)明(ming)楷書題跋)現藏故(gu)宮(gong)博(bo)(bo)(bo)物(wu)院;《漁(yu)樂圖》軸藏臺北故(gu)宮(gong)博(bo)(bo)(bo)物(wu)院;弘(hong)治十七(qi)年(1504)作(zuo)《織女圖》軸藏上海博(bo)(bo)(bo)物(wu)館(guan)。
其生(sheng)平按《吳越所見書(shu)畫錄(lu)》載(zai):“夢晉與(yu)唐六如、祝(zhu)希哲同時友善,畫更(geng)高于(yu)六如,死(si)亦更(geng)早。”言(yan)張(zhang)靈(ling)死(si)在唐寅(1470—1523)之前。徐禎卿(qing)《新倩籍》中有(you)記張(zhang)靈(ling)詩文(wen)(略),極盡悲悼哀憫之情。按徐禎卿(qing)卒(zu)于(yu)1511年(nian),時唐寅四十(shi)二歲,而張(zhang)靈(ling)必卒(zu)于(yu)徐之前,由此推知張(zhang)靈(ling)生(sheng)于(yu)成化(hua),約卒(zu)于(yu)正德初,年(nian)四十(shi)左右。

余(yu)少時,閱唐解元《六如集》有(you)云(yun):“六如嘗與祝(zhu)枝山(shan)、張(zhang)夢(meng)晉(jin),大雪中(zhong)效乞兒唱《蓮花》,得(de)錢(qian)沽酒,痛(tong)飲野寺(si)中(zhong)。曰:‘此(ci)(ci)樂,惜不令太白見之(zhi)。’”心竊疑焉(yan),然(ran)(ran)不知夢(meng)晉(jin)為何許人(ren)也。頃閱稗乘中(zhong),有(you)一編曰《十美圖》,乃詳載張(zhang)夢(meng)晉(jin)、崔素瓊(qiong)事。不覺驚喜叫跳,已而(er)潸(shan)然(ran)(ran)雨(yu)泣(qi)。此(ci)(ci)真古今來才子佳人(ren)之(zhi)軼事也,不可以不傳,遂為之(zhi)傳。
張(zhang)夢(meng)晉,名靈(ling)(ling)(ling),蓋正德時吳(wu)縣人(ren)也。生(sheng)而(er)姿容俊爽(shuang),才(cai)調(diao)無(wu)(wu)雙(shuang)(shuang),工詩善畫,性(xing)風流豪放,不(bu)(bu)可(ke)(ke)一世。家(jia)故赤貧,而(er)靈(ling)(ling)(ling)獨蚤慧(hui)。當(dang)舞勺時,父命靈(ling)(ling)(ling)出應童子(zi)(zi)(zi)試(shi)(shi)(shi),輒(zhe)以冠軍補弟子(zi)(zi)(zi)員。靈(ling)(ling)(ling)心顧不(bu)(bu)樂,以為(wei)才(cai)人(ren)何苦為(wei)章縫(feng)束縛,遂絕(jue)意(yi)不(bu)(bu)欲(yu)復應試(shi)(shi)(shi)。日縱酒(jiu)高吟,不(bu)(bu)肯妄交人(ren),人(ren)亦不(bu)(bu)敢(gan)輕交與(yu)(yu)(yu)。惟與(yu)(yu)(yu)唐解(jie)元六(liu)如(ru)作忘年友。靈(ling)(ling)(ling)既(ji)氏,不(bu)(bu)娶。六(liu)如(ru)試(shi)(shi)(shi)叩之(zhi)(zhi)。靈(ling)(ling)(ling)笑曰:“君(jun)豈(qi)有中意(yi)人(ren)足(zu)當(dang)吾偶者(zhe)(zhe)耶?”六(liu)如(ru)曰:“無(wu)(wu)之(zhi)(zhi)。但自(zi)(zi)(zi)古才(cai)子(zi)(zi)(zi)宜配佳(jia)人(ren),吾聊以此(ci)探(tan)君(jun)耳。”靈(ling)(ling)(ling)曰:“固然,今(jin)豈(qi)有其人(ren)哉?求(qiu)之(zhi)(zhi)數千年中,可(ke)(ke)當(dang)才(cai)子(zi)(zi)(zi)佳(jia)人(ren)者(zhe)(zhe),惟李(li)太白(bai)與(yu)(yu)(yu)崔鶯鶯耳。吾唯不(bu)(bu)才(cai),然自(zi)(zi)(zi)謫(zhe)仙而(er)外,似不(bu)(bu)敢(gan)多讓。若雙(shuang)(shuang)文,惜下嫁鄭恒(heng),正未知果識張(zhang)君(jun)瑞否?”六(liu)如(ru)曰:“謹(jin)受(shou)教。吾自(zi)(zi)(zi)今(jin)請為(wei)君(jun)訪之(zhi)(zhi),期得雙(shuang)(shuang)文以報命,可(ke)(ke)乎?”遂大(da)笑別去。
一(yi)(yi)日,靈(ling)獨坐讀《劉(liu)(liu)伶傳》,命童子(zi)進(jin)酒,屢讀屢叫絕,輒拍案浮(fu)一(yi)(yi)大白(bai)。久(jiu)之(zhi),童子(zi)跪進(jin)曰:“酒罄矣。今(jin)日唐解(jie)元與(yu)祝京(jing)兆宴集虎丘(qiu),公何不(bu)挾此(ci)編一(yi)(yi)往索醉耶(ye)?”靈(ling)大喜,即(ji)行。然不(bu)欲為不(bu)速客(ke)(ke)(ke),乃屏棄衣(yi)冠,科跣雙髻,衣(yi)鶉結,左持《劉(liu)(liu)伶傳》,右持木杖,謳(ou)吟道情詞,行乞(qi)(qi)而前。抵虎丘(qiu),見貴游蟻聚,綺席喧闐(tian)。靈(ling)每過一(yi)(yi)處,輒執書向客(ke)(ke)(ke)曰:“劉(liu)(liu)伶告飲(yin)!”客(ke)(ke)(ke)見其(qi)美(mei)丈夫,不(bu)類丐(gai)者,競以酒饌貽之(zhi)。有數賈(jia)人(ren),方酌酒賦(fu)詩(shi)(shi),靈(ling)至前,請屬和。賈(jia)人(ren)笑之(zhi)。其(qi)詩(shi)(shi)中有蒼官、青(qing)士、撲握、伊(yi)尼四事,因指以問(wen)靈(ling)。靈(ling)曰:“松竹(zhu)兔鹿,誰(shui)不(bu)知耶(ye)?”賈(jia)人(ren)始駭。令(ling)康(kang)詩(shi)(shi),靈(ling)即(ji)立揮百絕而去(qu)。遙(yao)見六如(ru)及祝京(jing)兆枝山數輩,共(gong)集可中亭。亦趨(qu)前執書告飲(yin)。六如(ru)早已(yi)知為靈(ling),見其(qi)佯(yang)(yang)狂游戲,戒(jie)座客(ke)(ke)(ke)佯(yang)(yang)為不(bu)識者,以觀之(zhi)。語靈(ling)曰:“爾丐(gai)子(zi)持書行乞(qi)(qi),想能(neng)賦(fu)詩(shi)(shi)。試題悟石軒(xuan)一(yi)(yi)絕句,如(ru)佳,即(ji)賜爾卮酒;否則(ze),當叩爾脛。”靈(ling)曰:“易耳(er)。”童子(zi)遂進(jin)毫楮。靈(ling)即(ji)書云:
勝跡天(tian)成說虎丘,可中(zhong)亭畔足酣游。
吟詩(shi)豈(qi)讓生公法(fa),頑石如何不點頭。
遂(sui)并毫楮擲地(di)曰(yue):“佳(jia)(jia)哉(zai)!擲地(di)金聲(sheng)也。”六如覽之(zhi),大(da)笑。因(yin)(yin)呼(hu)與共飲。時(shi),觀者如堵,莫不(bu)(bu)(bu)相顧驚(jing)怪。靈(ling)(ling)既醉,即(ji)(ji)拂衣起(qi),仍執書向悟(wu)石(shi)軒氏(shi)揖曰(yue):“劉伶謝飲!”遂(sui)不(bu)(bu)(bu)別座客(ke)徑去。六如謂枝山曰(yue):“今日(ri)我(wo)輩此(ci)舉,不(bu)(bu)(bu)減(jian)晉人風流,宜寫一(yi)幀,為《張靈(ling)(ling)行(xing)(xing)乞(qi)(qi)圖(tu)》,吾任繪事,而公題跋(ba)之(zhi),亦(yi)(yi)千秋佳(jia)(jia)話也。”即(ji)(ji)舐筆伸紙(zhi),俄(e)頃(qing)圖(tu)成。技山題數語其(qi)后(hou)。座客(ke)爭傳玩嘆(tan)賞(shang)。忽一(yi)翁縞衣素冠,前揖曰(yue):“二公即(ji)(ji)唐(tang)解元、祝京兆耶?仆(pu)企慕有年,何幸識韓(han)!”六如遜謝,徐叩之(zhi),則南昌明經崔(cui)(cui)文(wen)博(bo)以海虞廣文(wen)告歸(gui)者也。翁得圖(tu)諦視,不(bu)(bu)(bu)忍釋手。因(yin)(yin)訊適行(xing)(xing)乞(qi)(qi)者為誰(shui)。六如曰(yue):“敝里才于(yu)張靈(ling)(ling)也。”翁曰(yue):“誠然,此(ci)固(gu)非真才子不(bu)(bu)(bu)能。”即(ji)(ji)向六如乞(qi)(qi)此(ci)圖(tu)歸(gui)。將返(fan)舟(zhou)(zhou)(zhou)(zhou),見(jian)舟(zhou)(zhou)(zhou)(zhou)已移(yi)泊他所(suo),呼(hu)之(zhi)始至。蓋(gai)翁有女素瓊者,名瑩,才貌俱絕(jue)世。以新喪(sang)母,隨翁扶櫬(chen)歸(gui)。先(xian)艤舟(zhou)(zhou)(zhou)(zhou)岸側時(shi),聞人聲(sheng)喧(xuan)沸,乍啟檻(jian)窺之(zhi)。則見(jian)一(yi)丐者,狀貌殊(shu)不(bu)(bu)(bu)俗。丐者亦(yi)(yi)熟(shu)視檻(jian)中,忽登舟(zhou)(zhou)(zhou)(zhou)長跪(gui),自陳張靈(ling)(ling)求見(jian),屢發遣不(bu)(bu)(bu)去。良久(jiu),有一(yi)童子入舟(zhou)(zhou)(zhou)(zhou),強挽(wan)之(zhi),始去。故瑩命移(yi)舟(zhou)(zhou)(zhou)(zhou)避之(zhi)。崔(cui)(cui)翁乃(nai)出圖(tu)示瑩,且備述其(qi)故,瑩始知行(xing)(xing)乞(qi)(qi)者為張靈(ling)(ling)。嘆(tan)曰(yue):“此(ci)乃(nai)真風流才子也!”取圖(tu)藏(zang)笥中。翁擬以明日(ri)往(wang)謁(ye)唐(tang)、祝二君(jun),因(yin)(yin)訪(fang)靈(ling)(ling)。忽抱疴數日(ri)不(bu)(bu)(bu)起(qi),為榜人所(suo)促,遽(ju)返(fan)豫(yu)章。
靈既(ji)于舟次見(jian)瑩,以(yi)為(wei)絕代(dai)佳(jia)人(ren)(ren),也難再得。遂(sui)日走虎丘偵之,久之查然。屬靳人(ren)(ren)方志來(lai)校士。志既(ji)深惡古文詞(ci),而又聞(wen)靈跅(tuo)弛不羈(ji),竟褫(chi)(chi)其(qi)諸生。靈聞(wen)乃大(da)喜(xi)曰(yue)(yue):“吾正苦章(zhang)縫束縛(fu),今(jin)幸免矣!顧一(yi)(yi)褫(chi)(chi),何慮(lv)再褫(chi)(chi);且彼能褫(chi)(chi)吾諸生之名,亦能褫(chi)(chi)吾才子之名乎?”遂(sui)往(wang)過六如(ru)家(jia),見(jian)車騎填門(men),胥尉盈座。則江右寧藩宸(chen)濠(hao)遣使來(lai)迎者(zhe)也。六如(ru)擬赴其(qi)招。靈曰(yue)(yue):“甚善(shan)(shan)!吾正有厚望于君(jun)。吾曩者(zhe)虎莊所(suo)遇之佳(jia)人(ren)(ren),即(ji)豫(yu)(yu)章(zhang)人(ren)(ren)也。乞君(jun)為(wei)我多(duo)方訪(fang)之,冀得當(dang)以(yi)報(bao)我,此開天(tian)辟地(di)第一(yi)(yi)吃緊事也。幸無(wu)忽忘。”六如(ru)曰(yue)(yue):“諾。”即(ji)偕藩使過豫(yu)(yu)章(zhang)。時,宸(chen)濠(hao)久蓄異謀,其(qi)招致(zhi)六如(ru),一(yi)(yi)博好賢虛譽;一(yi)(yi)慕六如(ru)詩畫兼扶,欲倩其(qi)作《十美圖(tu)(tu)(tu)》,獻(xian)(xian)之九重。其(qi)時宮中已覓得九人(ren)(ren),尚虛其(qi)一(yi)(yi)。六如(ru)請先寫之。遂(sui)為(wei)寫九美,而各綴七絕一(yi)(yi)章(zhang)于后。九美者(zhe):廣陵湯之靄(ai)字雨君(jun),善(shan)(shan)畫;姑(gu)蘇木(mu)桂文舟,善(shan)(shan)琴;嘉禾朱嘉淑文孺(ru),善(shan)(shan)書(shu);金陵錢韶鳳生,善(shan)(shan)歌;江陵熊御(yu)小馮(feng),善(shan)(shan)舞;荊溪杜(du)若芳洲,善(shan)(shan)箏;洛(luo)陽(yang)花尊朱芳,善(shan)(shan)等;錢唐柳春陽(yang)絮(xu)才,善(shan)(shan)瑟;公安薛幼端端清,善(shan)(shan)簫也。圖(tu)(tu)(tu)詠既(ji)成,進之濠(hao),濠(hao)大(da)悅(yue)。乃盛設特宴(yan)六如(ru),而別一(yi)(yi)殿僚(liao)季(ji)生副(fu)之。季(ji)生者(zhe),憸人(ren)(ren)也。酒次,請觀九美圖(tu)(tu)(tu)。因(yin)進曰(yue)(yue):“十美欠一(yi)(yi),殊屬缺陷。某愿(yuan)舉一(yi)(yi)人(ren)(ren)以(yi)充(chong)其(qi)數,詰(jie)朝請持(chi)圖(tu)(tu)(tu)來(lai)獻(xian)(xian)。”比持(chi)圖(tu)(tu)(tu)以(yi)獻(xian)(xian),即(ji)崔瑩也。濠(hao)見(jian)之曰(yue)(yue):“此真國色(se)矣!”即(ji)屬季(ji)生往(wang)說之。
先是,崔翁家居時(shi),瑩(ying)(ying)才名噪(zao)甚,求(qiu)姻者踵至,翁度非瑩(ying)(ying)匹,悉拒不(bu)(bu)納。既從虎(hu)丘得張靈(ling),遂雅屬意靈(ling),不(bu)(bu)意疾作遽歸。思夏(xia)往吳中,托(tuo)六(liu)如(ru)主其(qi)事。適季生(sheng)旋里(li)喪耦,熟(shu)聞瑩(ying)(ying)名,預遣女畫師(shi)潛繪其(qi)容,而(er)求(qiu)姻于翁。翁謀(mou)諸瑩(ying)(ying),瑩(ying)(ying)固不(bu)(bu)許。于是,季生(sheng)銜之(zhi),因假手于濠(hao)(hao),以泄(xie)私忿(fen)。時(shi)濠(hao)(hao)威殊張甚,翁再三力辭,不(bu)(bu)得。瑩(ying)(ying)窘(jiong)激欲自裁,翁復(fu)多方(fang)護之(zhi)。瑩(ying)(ying)嘆(tan)曰:“命(ming)也,已矣!夫復(fu)何言!”乃取(qu)笥中《行乞圖》自題詩其(qi)上云:
才(cai)子風流第一人(ren),愿隨行乞(qi)樂清貧。入宮祇(zhi)恐無紅(hong)葉,臨(lin)別題(ti)詩(shi)當會真(zhen)。
舉以(yi)授翁(weng)曰:“愿持(chi)此復張郎,俾知(zhi)世間(jian)有情(qing)癡女子如(ru)崔素瓊者(zhe),亦不(bu)虛其為(wei)一(yi)生才(cai)子也!”遂慟哭入宮。濠得之(zhi)(zhi)喜甚,復倩六如(ru)圖詠(yong),以(yi)為(wei)十(shi)美之(zhi)(zhi)冠(guan)。而六如(ru)先已取季(ji)生所(suo)(suo)獻者(zhe),摹得一(yi)紙藏(zang)之(zhi)(zhi)。瑩既(ji)知(zhi)六如(ru)在宮中,乘間(jian)密致(zhi)一(yi)緘(jian),以(yi)述己意(yi)(yi)。六如(ru)得緘(jian),乃大驚惋,始知(zhi)此女即(ji)靈所(suo)(suo)托訪者(zhe)。“今事既(ji)不(bu)諧(xie),復為(wei)繪圖進獻,豈非千古(gu)罪人!將(jiang)來(lai)何(he)面(mian)目見良友(you)!”因急詣崔翁(weng),索(suo)得《行乞圖》返宮,將(jiang)相機維(wei)挽。不(bu)意(yi)(yi)十(shi)美已即(ji)日就道,六如(ru)悔恨無已。又(you)見濠逆跡漸著,急欲辭歸(gui),苦為(wei)濠羈縻。乃發(fa)狂,號呼顛擲,溲穢(hui)狼藉(jie)。濠久之(zhi)(zhi)不(bu)能堪,仍(reng)遣使送歸(gui),杜門月余乃起。過張靈時,靈已頹然臥病矣。
蓋靈(ling)(ling)自別六(liu)如后(hou),邑(yi)(yi)邑(yi)(yi)亡憀,日(ri)縱(zong)酒狂呼,或(huo)歌或(huo)哭(ku)。一(yi)日(ri)中(zhong)(zhong)秋,獨走虎丘千人(ren)石畔,見優伶演劇,靈(ling)(ling)佇(zhu)視良久,忽(hu)大叫曰(yue):“爾等所演不(bu)(bu)(bu)(bu)佳(jia),待吾演王子(zi)(zi)晉(jin)吹(chui)笙(sheng)跨(kua)鶴!”遂(sui)控一(yi)童(tong)(tong)子(zi)(zi)于地(di)而跨(kua)其背,攫伶人(ren)笙(sheng)吹(chui)之(zhi)(zhi)(zhi),命童(tong)(tong)子(zi)(zi)作(zuo)鶴飛(fei);捶之(zhi)(zhi)(zhi)不(bu)(bu)(bu)(bu)起,童(tong)(tong)子(zi)(zi)怒,掀靈(ling)(ling)于地(di)。靈(ling)(ling)起曰(yue):“鶴不(bu)(bu)(bu)(bu)肯飛(fei),吾今(jin)既(ji)不(bu)(bu)(bu)(bu)得為天(tian)仙,惟當作(zuo)水(shui)中(zhong)(zhong)仙耳!”遂(sui)躍(yue)(yue)入劍池中(zhong)(zhong)。眾急救之(zhi)(zhi)(zhi)出,則(ze)面額俱(ju)損,且(qie)傷股不(bu)(bu)(bu)(bu)能行(xing),人(ren)送其歸(gui)家(jia)。自此委(wei)頓枕席,日(ri)日(ri)在醉夢中(zhong)(zhong)。至(zhi)是,忽(hu)聞六(liu)如至(zhi),乃(nai)從榻間(jian)(jian)躍(yue)(yue)起,急叩豫章佳(jia)人(ren)狀。六(liu)如出所摹素瓊圖示之(zhi)(zhi)(zhi)。靈(ling)(ling)一(yi)見,詫為天(tian)人(ren),急捧(peng)置案問(wen),頂禮(li)跪拜(bai),自陳“才(cai)子(zi)(zi)張靈(ling)(ling)拜(bai)謁”云(yun)云(yun)。已(yi),聞瑩已(yi)入宮,乃(nai)撫(fu)圖痛哭(ku)。六(liu)如復(fu)出瑩所題《行(xing)乞(qi)圖》示之(zhi)(zhi)(zhi)。靈(ling)(ling)讀罷(ba),益痛哭(ku)。大呼:“佳(jia)人(ren)崔素瓊!”隨(sui)蹄(ti)地(di)嘔(ou)血不(bu)(bu)(bu)(bu)止。家(jia)人(ren)擁(yong)至(zhi)榻間(jian)(jian),病愈甚。三(san)日(ri)后(hou),邀六(liu)如與(yu)訣曰(yue):“已(yi)矣(yi)!唐君(jun)!吾今(jin)真死矣(yi)!死后(hou),乞(qi)以此圖殉葬。”索(suo)筆書片紙云(yun):“張靈(ling)(ling),字夢晉(jin),風流(liu)放誕(dan)人(ren)也,以情死。”遂(sui)擲筆而逝。六(liu)如哭(ku)之(zhi)(zhi)(zhi)慟,乃(nai)葬靈(ling)(ling)于玄墓山之(zhi)(zhi)(zhi)麓,而以圖殉焉。檢其生平文章,先已(yi)自焚,惟收其詩(shi)草及(ji)《行(xing)乞(qi)圖》以歸(gui)。
時(shi),瑩(ying)(ying)(ying)已率十美抵都。因(yin)駕(jia)幸榆林(lin),久之(zhi)(zhi)(zhi)未(wei)得(de)進御。而宸(chen)濠已舉兵反,為(wei)(wei)(wei)王守仁所(suo)敗,旋(xuan)即(ji)就擒。駕(jia)還(huan)時(shi),以(yi)十美為(wei)(wei)(wei)逆藩(fan)所(suo)獻,悉遣(qian)歸(gui)母家,聽其(qi)適人(ren)。于(yu)是瑩(ying)(ying)(ying)仍得(de)返豫(yu)章。值崔(cui)翁已捐館舍,有老仆(pu)崔(cui)恩殯之(zhi)(zhi)(zhi)。瑩(ying)(ying)(ying)哀痛(tong)至甚。然煢孑無依,葬(zang)(zang)父已畢(bi)(bi),遂(sui)挈裝徑抵吳門,命崔(cui)恩邀六(liu)如(ru)相見(jian)于(yu)舟(zhou)次。瑩(ying)(ying)(ying)首訊張靈(ling)(ling)(ling)近狀,六(liu)如(ru)愴然收涕(ti)曰(yue):“辱(ru)姊鍾情遠顧,奈此(ci)君福薄,今已為(wei)(wei)(wei)情鬼(gui)矣(yi)!”瑩(ying)(ying)(ying)聞(wen)之(zhi)(zhi)(zhi),嗚咽失聲(sheng)。詢知(zhi)(zhi)靈(ling)(ling)(ling)葬(zang)(zang)于(yu)玄墓(mu),約明(ming)日(ri)同(tong)往(wang)祭之(zhi)(zhi)(zhi)。六(liu)如(ru)明(ming)日(ri)果攜(xie)靈(ling)(ling)(ling)詩草及(ji)《行(xing)藝圖(tu)》至,與瑩(ying)(ying)(ying)各橈舟(zhou)抵靈(ling)(ling)(ling)墓(mu)所(suo),瑩(ying)(ying)(ying)衣輒(zhe)酹(lei),伏地拜哭(ku)甚哀。已乃懸《行(xing)乞圖(tu)》于(yu)墓(mu)前,陳設祭儀,坐石臺上,徐取靈(ling)(ling)(ling)詩草讀(du)之(zhi)(zhi)(zhi)。每讀(du)一(yi)(yi)章,輒(zhe)酹(lei)酒(jiu)一(yi)(yi)卮,大(da)呼(hu):“張靈(ling)(ling)(ling)才子!”一(yi)(yi)呼(hu)一(yi)(yi)哭(ku),哭(ku)罷又讀(du),往(wang)復不休(xiu)。六(liu)如(ru)不忍(ren)聞(wen),掩(yan)淚歸(gui)舟(zhou)。而崔(cui)恩佇立已久,勸慰無從,亦(yi)起去(qu),徘(pai)徊丘垅間。及(ji)返,則瑩(ying)(ying)(ying)已自縊于(yu)臺畔。恩大(da)驚,走告六(liu)如(ru)。六(liu)如(ru)趁(chen)視,見(jian)瑩(ying)(ying)(ying)已死(si)。嘆(tan)息跪拜曰(yue):“大(da)難!大(da)難!我唐寅(yin)今日(ri)得(de)見(jian)奇人(ren)奇事矣(yi)!”遂(sui)具(ju)棺衾,將易服斂之(zhi)(zhi)(zhi)。而瑩(ying)(ying)(ying)通體(ti)衫襦皆細綴嚴(yan)密無少隙,知(zhi)(zhi)其(qi)矢死(si)已久。六(liu)如(ru)因(yin)取詩草及(ji)《行(xing)乞圖(tu)》,并置棺中(zhong)為(wei)(wei)(wei)殉,啟靈(ling)(ling)(ling)擴與瑩(ying)(ying)(ying)同(tong)穴。而植(zhi)碑題其(qi)上云(yun):“明(ming)才子張夢晉、佳(jia)人(ren)崔(cui)素瓊合(he)葬(zang)(zang)之(zhi)(zhi)(zhi)墓(mu)”。時(shi),傾城士人(ren)哄傳感嘆(tan),無貴賤賢愚,爭(zheng)來(lai)吊(diao)誄,絡(luo)繹喧豗,云(yun)蒸雨集,哀聲(sheng)動(dong)地,殆莫知(zhi)(zhi)其(qi)由也(ye)。六(liu)如(ru)既(ji)合(he)葬(zang)(zang)靈(ling)(ling)(ling)、瑩(ying)(ying)(ying),檢瑩(ying)(ying)(ying)所(suo)遺(yi)囊中(zhong)裝,為(wei)(wei)(wei)置墓(mu)田,營丙舍,命崔(cui)恩居(ju)之(zhi)(zhi)(zhi),以(yi)供春秋奠掃之(zhi)(zhi)(zhi)役。嗚呼(hu)!才子佳(jia)人(ren),一(yi)(yi)旦至此(ci)。庶乎靈(ling)(ling)(ling)、瑩(ying)(ying)(ying)之(zhi)(zhi)(zhi)事畢(bi)(bi),而六(liu)如(ru)之(zhi)(zhi)(zhi)事亦(yi)畢(bi)(bi)矣(yi)。
而(er)(er)六(liu)(liu)如(ru)(ru)于(yu)明(ming)年(nian)仲春,躬(gong)詣墓所拜(bai)(bai)奠。夜宿丙舍旁,輾轉不(bu)(bu)(bu)寐,啟(qi)窗(chuang)縱目,則萬(wan)樹梅(mei)花(hua)(hua),一(yi)天明(ming)月(yue),不(bu)(bu)(bu)知(zhi)身在(zai)(zai)人(ren)世。六(liu)(liu)如(ru)(ru)悵然嘆(tan)曰(yue):“夢晉一(yi)生狂放、淪落不(bu)(bu)(bu)偶(ou),今(jin)得與(yu)崔(cui)美人(ren)合葬(zang)此(ci)(ci)間,消(xiao)受香(xiang)光,亦差可不(bu)(bu)(bu)負矣!但(dan)將未知(zhi)誰葬(zang)我(wo)(wo)唐寅耳!”不(bu)(bu)(bu)覺欷歔泣下。忽(hu)遙聞有人(ren)朗吟(yin)云:“花(hua)(hua)滿山(shan)中高士臥(wo),月(yue)明(ming)林下美人(ren)來。”六(liu)(liu)如(ru)(ru)急起入林迎揖,則張靈也(ye)(ye)。六(liu)(liu)如(ru)(ru)訝曰(yue):“君(jun)死(si)(si)已久,安得來此(ci)(ci)吟(yin)高季迪(di)詩(shi)?”靈笑曰(yue):“君(jun)以(yi)為我(wo)(wo)真(zhen)死(si)(si)耶?死(si)(si)者(zhe)形,不(bu)(bu)(bu)死(si)(si)者(zhe)性(xing),吾(wu)既(ji)為一(yi)世才(cai)(cai)子,死(si)(si)后(hou)豈(qi)若(ruo)他人(ren)泯沒耶?今(jin)乘此(ci)(ci)花(hua)(hua)滿山(shan)中,高士偃臥(wo)時來造訪耳。”復舉手(shou)前(qian)(qian)指(zhi)曰(yue):“此(ci)(ci)非‘月(yue)明(ming)林下美人(ren)來’乎?”六(liu)(liu)如(ru)(ru)回顧,有美人(ren)姍姍來前(qian)(qian),則崔(cui)瑩也(ye)(ye)。于(yu)是,兩人(ren)攜手(shou)整襟,向六(liu)(liu)如(ru)(ru)拜(bai)(bai)謝合葬(zang)之德。六(liu)(liu)如(ru)(ru)方扶掖之,忽(hu)又(you)有人(ren)大(da)呼(hu)曰(yue):“我(wo)(wo)高季迪(di)梅(mei)花(hua)(hua)詩(shi),乃(nai)千古絕(jue)唱(chang),何物張靈,妄稱才(cai)(cai)子,改(gai)‘雪’為‘花(hua)(hua)’,定須飽我(wo)(wo)老拳(quan)!”六(liu)(liu)如(ru)(ru)轉瞬之間,靈、瑩俱失所在(zai)(zai)。其人(ren)直前(qian)(qian)呼(hu)曰(yue):“當捶此(ci)(ci)改(gai)詩(shi)之賊才(cai)(cai)子!”捽六(liu)(liu)如(ru)(ru)欲毆之,六(liu)(liu)如(ru)(ru)驚寤。則半窗(chuang)明(ming)月(yue),闃其無人(ren)。六(liu)(liu)如(ru)(ru)憮然,始信真(zhen)才(cai)(cai)子與(yu)真(zhen)佳人(ren),蓋死(si)(si)而(er)(er)不(bu)(bu)(bu)死(si)(si)也(ye)(ye)。因匡坐(zuo)梅(mei)窗(chuang)下,作《張靈崔(cui)瑩合傳(chuan)》以(yi)紀其事。然今(jin)日《六(liu)(liu)如(ru)(ru)集(ji)》中,固未嘗見此(ci)(ci)傳(chuan)也(ye)(ye)。余又(you)安得而(er)(er)不(bu)(bu)(bu)亟補之哉。
畸史氏(shi)曰:嗟(jie)乎!蓋吾閱《十美圖編》,而后(hou)知世(shi)間真有(you)才子(zi)佳(jia)人(ren)也。從(cong)來稗官家言,大抵真贗參半(ban)。若(ruo)夢(meng)(meng)晉(jin)(jin)之(zhi)(zhi)名,既(ji)章章于(yu)《六如集》中,但素瓊(qiong)之(zhi)(zhi)事(shi),無從(cong)考證。雖然(ran),有(you)其(qi)事(shi)何(he)必無其(qi)人(ren),且安知非作者有(you)為(wei)而發乎?獨怪夢(meng)(meng)晉(jin)(jin)之(zhi)(zhi)才,目空千古(gu),而其(qi)尚論才子(zi)佳(jia)人(ren),則(ze)專(zhuan)以(yi)(yi)(yi)太白與鶯(ying)(ying)鶯(ying)(ying)當之(zhi)(zhi)。夫太白誠天上(shang)仙才,不可有(you)二。若(ruo)千古(gu)佳(jia)人(ren),自(zi)當以(yi)(yi)(yi)文(wen)君為(wei)第一。而夢(meng)(meng)晉(jin)(jin)顧舍彼取此(ci),厥后(hou),果遇(yu)素瓊(qiong),毋乃(nai)思崔得崔,適符其(qi)讖耶(ye)?至(zhi)于(yu)張(zhang)以(yi)(yi)(yi)情死(si),崔以(yi)(yi)(yi)情殉,初(chu)非有(you)一詞半(ban)縷之(zhi)(zhi)成約,而慷慨(kai)從(cong)容,等泰山于(yu)鴻毛,徒(tu)以(yi)(yi)(yi)才色相憐(lian)之(zhi)(zhi)故。推此(ci)志也,凜凜生氣,日(ri)月爭光,又遠(yuan)出琴心犢鼻(bi)之(zhi)(zhi)上(shang)矣。而或者猶(you)追恨于(yu)夢(meng)(meng)晉(jin)(jin)之(zhi)(zhi)早死(si)。以(yi)(yi)(yi)為(wei)夢(meng)(meng)晉(jin)(jin)若(ruo)不死(si),則(ze)素瓊(qiong)遣歸之(zhi)(zhi)日(ri),正(zheng)崔張(zhang)好合(he)之(zhi)(zhi)年,后(hou)此(ci)或白頭(tou)唱和,蘭(lan)玉盈階,未可知也。噫!此(ci)固庸庸蚩蚩者之(zhi)(zhi)厚福也,何(he)有(you)于(yu)才子(zi)佳(jia)人(ren)哉!
張(zhang)靈(ling)(ling)本窶人子(zi),力作自給,而靈(ling)(ling)生(sheng)乃有(you)爽氣,嗜酒醉(zui)則作狂(kuang)曰(yue)(yue):“日休(xiu),小(xiao)豎(shu)子(zi)耳(er),尚能(neng)稱(cheng)醉(zui)士(shi),我獨(du)不(bu)(bu)能(neng)醉(zui)耶!”所(suo)與游(you)者(zhe),吳趨、唐寅(yin)最善,寅(yin)嘗擬游(you)武丘,召靈(ling)(ling)與俱往,促之(zhi),尚臥,寅(yin)抵寢所(suo)呼曰(yue)(yue):“日高舂矣,睡(shui)何(he)為(wei)?”靈(ling)(ling)覺,怒曰(yue)(yue):“今(jin)者(zhe)無酒,雅懷殊不(bu)(bu)啟。方入醉(zui)鄉,又為(wei)相攪。”寅(yin)曰(yue)(yue):“所(suo)以來,固(gu)欲邀子(zi)。”靈(ling)(ling)喜,加衣起,遂與寅(yin)上舟扣舷(xian)痛飲,作《野(ye)人歌(ge)》。會數賈(jia)飲于可中亭(ting),且詠詩,因更衣為(wei)丐者(zhe)上,賈(jia)與食啖之(zhi),靈(ling)(ling)請續(xu)和。時賈(jia)所(suo)為(wei)詩有(you)“蒼(cang)(cang)官”、“青(qing)士(shi)”、“撲握”,“伊(yi)尼(ni)”諸詞,因以問靈(ling)(ling),靈(ling)(ling)曰(yue)(yue):“蒼(cang)(cang)官,松也(ye);青(qing)士(shi),竹也(ye);撲握,免也(ye);伊(yi)尼(ni),鹿也(ye)。”賈(jia)始(shi)駭令賡(geng),靈(ling)(ling)即揮毫不(bu)(bu)已(yi),凡百(bai)絕(jue)。抵舟,命(ming)童子(zi)易維蘿陰下令跡絕(jue)。賈(jia)使人察之(zhi),不(bu)(bu)見也(ye)。皆以為(wei)神仙。賈(jia)去,復上亭(ting),朱衣金目,作胡人舞形(xing)狀,殊絕(jue)。
祝允(yun)明嘗偕(xie)陸(lu)濟民、張夢晉、韓壽(shou)椿(chun)登虎丘浮屠(tu)。登至(zhi)絕頂,但見八荒(huang)洞然,萬籟齊(qi)發,飲酒樂甚(shen)。壽(shou)椿(chun)出紙筆賦詩(shi)(shi)(shi)以(yi)紀(ji)其(qi)(qi)游(you),允(yun)明詩(shi)(shi)(shi)先成,云(yun)(yun)(yun):“草(cao)木衣裳(shang)下,煙霞掌握中(zhong)(zhong)。偶然飛(fei)(fei)咳唾(tuo),珠(zhu)玉滿天風。”濟民云(yun)(yun)(yun):“極目飛(fei)(fei)鴻小,致身云(yun)(yun)(yun)路(lu)中(zhong)(zhong)。詩(shi)(shi)(shi)人(ren)少(shao)知(zhi)己(ji),發付與東風。”夢晉云(yun)(yun)(yun):“慮遣塵寰外,天歸眼界(jie)中(zhong)(zhong)。新(xin)詩(shi)(shi)(shi)三百(bai)首,句(ju)(ju)句(ju)(ju)答松風。”壽(shou)椿(chun)云(yun)(yun)(yun):“詩(shi)(shi)(shi)寄千峰抄,春(chun)橫一鏡中(zhong)(zhong)。攜(xie)壺兼荷鐘,不(bu)減晉人(ren)風。”詩(shi)(shi)(shi)成閣筆,天風颯然飄其(qi)(qi)詩(shi)(shi)(shi)草(cao),盤旋直上太虛(xu),如神物(wu)掀舞。將擲地,又(you)為(wei)蒼鷹所舉,竟(jing)不(bu)知(zhi)其(qi)(qi)所止(zhi)。遂名為(wei)“飛(fei)(fei)詩(shi)(shi)(shi)會(hui)。”
初(chu),張靈與唐寅俱為郡學(xue)生,博古相尚(shang)。適(shi)鄞(yin)人方志來(lai)督學(xue),惡古文詞,察知(zhi)寅,欲中(zhong)(zhong)傷之(zhi),靈挹郁(yu)不(bu)自(zi)遣(qian)。寅曰:“子(zi)未(wei)為所知(zhi),何(he)愁之(zhi)甚?”靈曰:“獨(du)不(bu)聞龍王欲斬(zhan)有尾族,蝦蟆亦(yi)哭乎?”后(hou)靈果為所斥罷,或謂之(zhi)曰:“以子(zi)之(zhi)才,顧不(bu)得激致青云,乃重遭顯棄,豈(qi)無雉經之(zhi)用,而何(he)以立于世(shi)?”靈曰:“昔謝豹化為蟲(chong),行地中(zhong)(zhong),以足覆面作(zuo)忍恥狀。吏靈用子(zi)言,亦(yi)當(dang)如是(shi)矣。縱不(bu)爾,亦(yi)安得更銜鑿落(luo)耶!”靈臨終前三日(ri)作(zuo)詩(shi)云:“一枚(mei)蟬蛻榻(ta)當(dang)中(zhong)(zhong),命也難(nan)辭付大空。垂死尚(shang)思玄墓麓(lu),滿山寒雪(xue)一林松。”后(hou)一日(ri)又作(zuo)詩(shi)云:“彷(pang)佛飛(fei)魂亂哭聲,多(duo)(duo)情于此轉多(duo)(duo)情。欲將眾(zhong)淚澆心火,何(he)日(ri)張家再托生?”聞者莫不(bu)悲之(zhi)。
