據《云笈七簽》引《洞(dong)(dong)真(zhen)(zhen)大洞(dong)(dong)真(zhen)(zhen)經》稱(cheng),靈寶(bao)(bao)天(tian)尊(zun)(zun)系“玉(yu)(yu)晨之(zhi)(zhi)精氣,九慶(qing)之(zhi)(zhi)紫煙(yan),玉(yu)(yu)輝煥耀,金映流真(zhen)(zhen),結化(hua)含(han)秀,苞凝(ning)元(yuan)(yuan)(yuan)神(shen),寄胎(tai)母(mu)氏,育(yu)形為(wei)人”。《靈寶(bao)(bao)略記(ji)》則(ze)稱(cheng)“太上大道(dao)(dao)君(jun)以開皇元(yuan)(yuan)(yuan)年托胎(tai)于(yu)西方綠那玉(yu)(yu)國,寄孕于(yu)洪氏之(zhi)(zhi)胞,凝(ning)神(shen)瓊胎(tai)之(zhi)(zhi)府三千七百年,降誕(dan)于(yu)其國郁察山浮羅之(zhi)(zhi)岳丹玄之(zhi)(zhi)阿側,名曰器度,字(zi)上開元(yuan)(yuan)(yuan)。及(ji)其長,乃啟悟(wu)道(dao)(dao)真(zhen)(zhen),期心高道(dao)(dao),坐于(yu)枯桑之(zhi)(zhi)下(xia),精思百日而元(yuan)(yuan)(yuan)始(shi)天(tian)尊(zun)(zun)下(xia)降,授靈寶(bao)(bao)大乘(cheng)之(zhi)(zhi)法十部妙經”。
靈寶天(tian)尊是大(da)(da)道(dao)(dao)化身之(zhi)一。《大(da)(da)洞(dong)真經(jing)》云:“上(shang)清高圣太上(shang)大(da)(da)道(dao)(dao)君者,蓋玉(yu)宸之(zhi)精氣,慶云之(zhi)紫(zi)煙,玉(yu)暉曜煥,金映流真,結化含秀,包凝立神,道(dao)(dao)君即廣宣經(jing)箓,傳乎萬世。”《云笈七簽》卷(juan)三(san)亦云:“玉(yu)宸道(dao)(dao)君者乃大(da)(da)道(dao)(dao)之(zhi)化身也(ye),言其有不(bu)可以(yi)隨迎,謂其無(wu)復(fu)存乎恍(huang)惚,所以(yi)不(bu)有而有,不(bu)無(wu)而無(wu),視之(zhi)無(wu)象(xiang),聽之(zhi)無(wu)聲,于妙有妙無(wu)之(zhi)間大(da)(da)道(dao)(dao)存焉,道(dao)(dao)君即審道(dao)(dao)之(zhi)本(ben),洞(dong)道(dao)(dao)之(zhi)元,為道(dao)(dao)之(zhi)炁(qi)。”
陶弘(hong)景編寫的《真(zhen)靈(ling)位(wei)業圖》列靈(ling)寶天尊在(zai)第(di)二神(shen)階(jie)之(zhi)中位(wei),僅次于第(di)一(yi)神(shen)階(jie)中位(wei)之(zhi)元始天尊。
自元(yuan)始天(tian)尊(zun)(zun)處受經法以(yi)后(hou),上(shang)(shang)清(qing)靈寶天(tian)尊(zun)(zun)即輔佐(zuo)元(yuan)始天(tian)尊(zun)(zun),居(ju)三十(shi)六天(tian)之(zhi)(zhi)第二(er)高位上(shang)(shang)清(qing)境,在三十(shi)四天(tian)之(zhi)(zhi)上(shang)(shang),治(zhi)蕊(rui)珠日闕,管七映紫房,金童玉女各侍(shi)衛三十(shi)萬。萬神入拜,五德(de)把符,上(shang)(shang)真侍(shi)晨(chen),天(tian)皇抱(bao)圖(tu)。
靈(ling)寶天(tian)(tian)尊以靈(ling)寶之(zhi)法,隨世度(du)人。自元(yuan)始開光,至于(yu)赤明(ming)元(yuan)年,經九千(qian)(qian)九百億萬(wan)劫,度(du)人有(you)(you)如塵沙之(zhi)眾,不(bu)可勝(sheng)量。凡遇(yu)有(you)(you)緣好學之(zhi)人,請問(wen)疑難,靈(ling)寶天(tian)(tian)尊即(ji)不(bu)吝教誨。天(tian)(tian)尊有(you)(you)三十六變(bian)、七十二化,人欲(yu)見之(zhi),隨感而應,千(qian)(qian)萬(wan)處(chu)可分身即(ji)到。
道(dao)教宮觀(guan)里(li)的三清(qing)殿中(zhong),靈寶(bao)天(tian)(tian)尊(zun)常(chang)以(yi)手(shou)捧如意之(zhi)(zhi)像(xiang)居(ju)元始天(tian)(tian)尊(zun)之(zhi)(zhi)左(zuo)側(ce)位(wei)。在道(dao)教大(da)型(xing)齋醮禮儀中(zhong)也多設有三清(qing)神位(wei),以(yi)靈寶(bao)天(tian)(tian)尊(zun)居(ju)元始天(tian)(tian)尊(zun)之(zhi)(zhi)左(zuo)位(wei)。靈寶(bao)天(tian)(tian)尊(zun)之(zhi)(zhi)神誕(dan)日(ri)(ri)為(wei)夏至日(ri)(ri),約在農歷五月中(zhong)。民間于夏至日(ri)(ri)之(zhi)(zhi)供(gong)奉(feng)常(chang)以(yi)靈寶(bao)天(tian)(tian)尊(zun)為(wei)主神。
