普利(li)策文學獎不是(shi)一個(ge)(ge)獨立(li)(li)的(de)獎項，而是(shi)美(mei)國(guo)普利(li)策獎眾多分(fen)枝中的(de)一個(ge)(ge)。約瑟(se)夫·普利(li)策在去世(shi)前第(di)7年——1904年，立(li)(li)下遺囑，將自己的(de)財產捐獻給美(mei)國(guo)的(de)哥(ge)倫比亞大學，由他們建立(li)(li)一個(ge)(ge)新聞(wen)學院。這(zhe)筆高達200萬美(mei)元的(de)款項中，有(you)四(si)分(fen)之一被(bei)用來設立(li)(li)獎項，后來這(zhe)筆錢成(cheng)為(wei)了普利(li)策獎的(de)基金。1917年，該獎的(de)第(di)一屆頒(ban)獎儀(yi)式舉行，此后每年頒(ban)發一次。
約瑟夫·普(pu)(pu)利(li)策(ce)生前(qian)是(shi)美國最著名(ming)的(de)(de)(de)(de)報(bao)人，他創立的(de)(de)(de)(de)編輯寫作(zuo)制(zhi)度(du)至今都(dou)在影響著報(bao)業的(de)(de)(de)(de)運作(zuo)，因而普(pu)(pu)利(li)策(ce)獎(jiang)(jiang)中最重要的(de)(de)(de)(de)組成部(bu)分就是(shi)新聞類獎(jiang)(jiang)項(xiang)(xiang)(xiang)。目(mu)前(qian)共包(bao)含突發新聞報(bao)道獎(jiang)(jiang)、調查報(bao)道獎(jiang)(jiang)等14個(ge)。但是(shi)“由于普(pu)(pu)利(li)策(ce)敏銳、有(you)遠見(jian)的(de)(de)(de)(de)洞(dong)察力(li)”，該獎(jiang)(jiang)還設立了(le)文(wen)藝類獎(jiang)(jiang)項(xiang)(xiang)(xiang)，目(mu)前(qian)包(bao)括6個(ge)文(wen)學獎(jiang)(jiang)和一個(ge)音樂獎(jiang)(jiang)，而且正是(shi)這些非新聞類的(de)(de)(de)(de)獎(jiang)(jiang)項(xiang)(xiang)(xiang)在一定程度(du)上擴大了(le)普(pu)(pu)利(li)策(ce)獎(jiang)(jiang)的(de)(de)(de)(de)影響力(li)。目(mu)前(qian)普(pu)(pu)利(li)策(ce)獎(jiang)(jiang)每個(ge)獎(jiang)(jiang)項(xiang)(xiang)(xiang)的(de)(de)(de)(de)獎(jiang)(jiang)金為(wei)一萬美元。
最初普利策只設(she)(she)立了(le)(le)13個獎(jiang)項(xiang)，其(qi)中文(wen)學獎(jiang)有(you)5個，包括(kuo)小說類、戲劇類和(he)傳記(ji)類等(deng)等(deng)。但是出于長(chang)遠(yuan)考慮，他決定設(she)(she)立一(yi)個監(jian)督咨詢委員會(hui)，由后者在將來確定獎(jiang)項(xiang)的(de)(de)設(she)(she)立、變更等(deng)等(deng)。幾(ji)十年來，這個委員會(hui)做出了(le)(le)一(yi)些很有(you)突破性(xing)的(de)(de)決定，曾先后增設(she)(she)了(le)(le)攝影類和(he)詩類獎(jiang)項(xiang)，并打破了(le)(le)“音樂獎(jiang)的(de)(de)評選范圍僅(jin)限于古典音樂領域”的(de)(de)界限。
普利(li)策文學獎的(de)(de)標新立異之處在于它與大(da)眾口(kou)味的(de)(de)背(bei)道而(er)馳，暢銷的(de)(de)文學作品從(cong)不受(shou)它的(de)(de)垂青(qing)，即便大(da)作家(jia)的(de)(de)作品也不例外。
諸如，1941年它就(jiu)“拋棄”了紅極一時的(de)《喪鐘為誰而鳴》，直到12年后(hou)《老人與海(hai)》問世時，它才(cai)將文(wen)學獎授(shou)予海(hai)明威。同樣(yang)如福克納的(de)《八月之光》也(ye)有此“待遇”。這種(zhong)評選(xuan)使得它經常(chang)被置于爭議(yi)之中，在一本《美(mei)國普(pu)利策(ce)獎金內幕》的(de)書(shu)中就(jiu)曾(ceng)提到，1988年曾(ceng)有近50位(wei)作家(jia)(jia)給媒體寫信，怒稱兩(liang)名(ming)最受讀者推(tui)崇(chong)的(de)美(mei)國黑(hei)人作家(jia)(jia)從未進入普(pu)利策(ce)獎的(de)視野，并認為它有種(zhong)族主義傾向。而且(qie)普(pu)利策(ce)文(wen)學獎空(kong)缺多屆，迄(qi)今(jin)已不下10次。
實際上很多優秀的作(zuo)品(pin)還是沒(mei)有被(bei)普利策文學獎(jiang)錯過的，其中包括伊迪(di)絲·華(hua)頓(dun)的《天(tian)真時代》（1921年(nian)獲(huo)(huo)(huo)獎(jiang)）、賽珍珠(zhu)的《大地》（1932年(nian)獲(huo)(huo)(huo)獎(jiang)）、瑪格麗特(te)·米切爾的《飄(piao)》（1937年(nian)獲(huo)(huo)(huo)獎(jiang)）、約翰(han)·斯(si)坦貝(bei)克(ke)的《憤怒(nu)的葡萄》（1940年(nian)獲(huo)(huo)(huo)獎(jiang)）、赫爾曼·沃(wo)克(ke)的《凱恩艦嘩變(bian)》（1952年(nian)獲(huo)(huo)(huo)獎(jiang)）、哈珀(po)·李(li)的《殺死一只(zhi)知(zhi)更鳥》（1961年(nian)獲(huo)(huo)(huo)獎(jiang)）、艾(ai)麗斯(si)·沃(wo)克(ke)的《紫(zi)色》（1983年(nian)獲(huo)(huo)(huo)獎(jiang)）等等。這些作(zuo)品(pin)都(dou)曾在中國(guo)出版過。
