唐貞(zhen)元中,有張(zhang)生者(zhe),性溫(wen)茂,美風(feng)容,內秉堅(jian)孤,非(fei)禮不(bu)可入。或(huo)朋従游(you)宴,擾(rao)雜其(qi)間,他人皆洶洶拳(quan)拳(quan),若將不(bu)及;張(zhang)生容順而(er)(er)已,終不(bu)能亂(luan)。以是年二十三,未(wei)嘗(chang)近女色。知(zhi)者(zhe)詰之(zhi)(zhi),謝(xie)而(er)(er)言(yan)曰:"登徒(tu)子非(fei)好色者(zhe),是有兇(xiong)行(xing)。余真好色者(zhe),而(er)(er)適不(bu)我值。何以言(yan)之(zhi)(zhi)?大凡(fan)物之(zhi)(zhi)尤者(zhe),未(wei)嘗(chang)不(bu)留(liu)連于心,是知(zhi)其(qi)非(fei)忘情者(zhe)也。"詰者(zhe)識之(zhi)(zhi)。

無幾何,張生游于蒲(pu),蒲(pu)之(zhi)東十余里,有僧舍曰普救寺,張生寓(yu)焉。適有崔(cui)氏孀婦(fu)(fu),將歸(gui)長安,路出(chu)于蒲(pu),亦止茲寺。崔(cui)氏婦(fu)(fu),鄭女也(ye);張出(chu)于鄭,緒其親,乃異派之(zhi)従(cong)母。是(shi)歲,渾瑊薨于蒲(pu),有中(zhong)人(ren)(ren)丁(ding)文雅,不善于軍,軍人(ren)(ren)因喪而擾(rao),大掠(lve)蒲(pu)人(ren)(ren)。崔(cui)氏之(zhi)家,財產甚厚,多奴(nu)仆,旅寓(yu)惶(huang)駭(hai),不知所托。

數月,復游(you)于蒲(pu),會于崔(cui)氏(shi)(shi)者(zhe)又(you)累月。崔(cui)氏(shi)(shi)甚工刀札,善(shan)屬文,求索再(zai)三,終不(bu)(bu)可見。往往張(zhang)(zhang)生(sheng)自以(yi)文挑,亦不(bu)(bu)甚睹覽。大(da)略崔(cui)之(zhi)(zhi)(zhi)(zhi)(zhi)出人(ren)者(zhe),藝必窮極(ji),而(er)貌若不(bu)(bu)知;言則敏(min)辯,而(er)寡于酬對。待張(zhang)(zhang)之(zhi)(zhi)(zhi)(zhi)(zhi)意(yi)甚厚,然未嘗以(yi)詞繼(ji)之(zhi)(zhi)(zhi)(zhi)(zhi)。時愁艷(yan)幽邃(sui),恒若不(bu)(bu)識;喜慍之(zhi)(zhi)(zhi)(zhi)(zhi)容,亦罕形見。異時獨夜操琴(qin),愁弄凄(qi)惻,張(zhang)(zhang)竊聽(ting)之(zhi)(zhi)(zhi)(zhi)(zhi),求之(zhi)(zhi)(zhi)(zhi)(zhi),則終不(bu)(bu)復鼓(gu)矣(yi)(yi)。以(yi)是愈惑(huo)之(zhi)(zhi)(zhi)(zhi)(zhi)。張(zhang)(zhang)生(sheng)俄以(yi)文調及(ji)期,又(you)當西去(qu)(qu)。當去(qu)(qu)之(zhi)(zhi)(zhi)(zhi)(zhi)夕(xi),不(bu)(bu)復自言其(qi)情,愁嘆于崔(cui)氏(shi)(shi)之(zhi)(zhi)(zhi)(zhi)(zhi)側。崔(cui)已(yi)陰知將訣(jue)矣(yi)(yi),恭(gong)貌怡聲(sheng),徐謂張(zhang)(zhang)曰:"始亂之(zhi)(zhi)(zhi)(zhi)(zhi),終棄之(zhi)(zhi)(zhi)(zhi)(zhi),固(gu)其(qi)宜矣(yi)(yi),愚不(bu)(bu)敢恨。必也(ye)君(jun)亂之(zhi)(zhi)(zhi)(zhi)(zhi),君(jun)終之(zhi)(zhi)(zhi)(zhi)(zhi),君(jun)之(zhi)(zhi)(zhi)(zhi)(zhi)惠(hui)也(ye);則歿身之(zhi)(zhi)(zhi)(zhi)(zhi)誓,其(qi)有終矣(yi)(yi),又(you)何必深感于此(ci)行?然而(er)君(jun)既(ji)不(bu)(bu)懌,無以(yi)奉(feng)寧。君(jun)常(chang)謂我(wo)善(shan)鼓(gu)琴(qin),向(xiang)時羞(xiu)顏,所不(bu)(bu)能及(ji)。今且往矣(yi)(yi),既(ji)君(jun)此(ci)誠(cheng)。"因命拂琴(qin),鼓(gu)《霓(ni)裳羽衣(yi)序》,不(bu)(bu)數聲(sheng),哀音怨亂,不(bu)(bu)復知其(qi)是曲也(ye)。左右(you)皆唏噓,張(zhang)(zhang)亦遽止之(zhi)(zhi)(zhi)(zhi)(zhi)。投琴(qin),泣下流連,趨(qu)歸鄭(zheng)所,遂不(bu)(bu)復至。明旦(dan)而(er)張(zhang)(zhang)行。

所善楊巨(ju)源好(hao)屬詞,因為賦《崔娘詩》一絕云:"清潤(run)潘郎玉不如,中庭蕙草雪銷初。風流(liu)才子多春(chun)思,腸斷蕭娘一紙書。"河南(nan)元稹,亦續生《會真詩》三十韻。詩曰:

張(zhang)之(zhi)(zhi)友聞之(zhi)(zhi)者(zhe),莫不(bu)聳異之(zhi)(zhi),然而張(zhang)志(zhi)亦絕矣。稹(zhen)特(te)與張(zhang)厚(hou),因徵其詞。張(zhang)曰:"大凡天之(zhi)(zhi)所命尤物也(ye),不(bu)妖其身,必妖于人。使崔氏子(zi)遇合富(fu)貴,乘(cheng)寵嬌,不(bu)為(wei)(wei)(wei)云,不(bu)為(wei)(wei)(wei)雨,為(wei)(wei)(wei)蛟為(wei)(wei)(wei)螭,吾不(bu)知其所變化矣。昔殷之(zhi)(zhi)辛,周(zhou)之(zhi)(zhi)幽,據(ju)百萬之(zhi)(zhi)國,其勢甚厚(hou)。然而一女子(zi)敗(bai)之(zhi)(zhi),潰其眾,屠其身,至今(jin)為(wei)(wei)(wei)天下僇(lu)笑。予之(zhi)(zhi)德(de)不(bu)足以勝妖孽,是用忍(ren)情。"于時(shi)坐者(zhe)皆(jie)為(wei)(wei)(wei)深嘆。

關于張生的原型(xing),舊(jiu)有張籍(文昌)、張珙(gong)(君(jun)瑞)、張先(子野)三說﹐皆誤。

宋代王铚在《〈傳(chuan)奇〉辯證(zheng)》考(kao)證(zheng)張生為元稹(zhen)本(ben)人。

宋代趙(zhao)令(ling)畤在《侯鯖集(ji)》第(di)五卷,《辯傳奇鶯鶯事》中論證(zheng)

詳細。

魯迅(xun)在《中國(guo)小(xiao)說史略》中說:“《鶯鶯傳》者,……元稹(zhen)以張(zhang)生自(zi)寓,述(shu)其親歷之境。”

今(jin)人吳偉斌著《元稹考論》,商榷魯迅、陳寅恪、岑(cen)仲(zhong)勉等名(ming)家的權威(wei)結(jie)論,否定“張生自寓(yu)”說。

鶯鶯

關于(yu)崔(cui)鶯(ying)鶯(ying)的原型,王铚(zhi)認為鶯(ying)鶯(ying)是元稹姨母(mu)鄭氏(shi)與永年縣(xian)尉崔(cui)鵬之女崔(cui)氏(shi),即元稹的表妹。

近(jin)人(ren)陳寅恪從元稹(zhen)詩集(ji)一首《曹十九(jiu)(jiu)舞綠鈿》,假定“曹十九(jiu)(jiu)”是(shi)“曹九(jiu)(jiu)九(jiu)(jiu)”的(de)(de)訛(e)誤,又說(shuo)“九(jiu)(jiu)九(jiu)(jiu)”二字(zi)古音與鶯鳥鳴聲相近(jin),認為崔鶯鶯應是(shi)名(ming)叫“曹九(jiu)(jiu)九(jiu)(jiu)”的(de)(de)“酒家(jia)胡(hu)”,“此女(nv)姓曹名(ming)九(jiu)(jiu)九(jiu)(jiu),殆亦出于中亞(ya)種族”,因“中亞(ya)胡(hu)人(ren)善于釀酒”,得出曹九(jiu)(jiu)九(jiu)(jiu)是(shi)“酒家(jia)胡(hu)”的(de)(de)結論。

還有一些其(qi)它說法,今人(ren)卞(bian)孝萱在《元稹(zhen)年(nian)譜》中指出,“‘工(gong)于投機(ji)取巧之才(cai)人(ren)’元稹(zhen),怎么忽然蠢(chun)起來,把一個社會地位低下的‘酒家胡’,說成自(zi)己的姨妹?”。

吳偉斌在《元(yuan)稹(zhen)考(kao)論(lun)》和《元(yuan)稹(zhen)評傳》中對(dui)《元(yuan)稹(zhen)年譜》、《元(yuan)白詩箋(jian)證(zheng)(zheng)稿》等進行糾謬,重(zhong)新考(kao)證(zheng)(zheng)了元(yuan)稹(zhen)的為人和其作品,“解決(jue)了學(xue)術界(jie)關(guan)于元(yuan)稹(zhen)一(yi)直無(wu)法自圓的諸(zhu)多問題”。人物考(kao)證(zheng)(zheng)至今仍無(wu)定論(lun)。

《鶯(ying)(ying)(ying)(ying)(ying)(ying)鶯(ying)(ying)(ying)(ying)(ying)(ying)傳(chuan)》寫張(zhang)生(sheng)(sheng)(sheng)與崔鶯(ying)(ying)(ying)(ying)(ying)(ying)鶯(ying)(ying)(ying)(ying)(ying)(ying)戀愛,后來又將她遺棄(qi)的(de)故事。起始張(zhang)生(sheng)(sheng)(sheng)旅(lv)居(ju)蒲州普救寺(si)時(shi)(shi)(shi)(shi)發生(sheng)(sheng)(sheng)兵亂(luan)(luan),出力救護(hu)了同寓(yu)寺(si)中的(de)遠房姨母鄭(zheng)氏(shi)一(yi)家(jia)。在鄭(zheng)氏(shi)的(de)答謝宴上(shang),張(zhang)生(sheng)(sheng)(sheng)對表(biao)妹鶯(ying)(ying)(ying)(ying)(ying)(ying)鶯(ying)(ying)(ying)(ying)(ying)(ying)一(yi)見(jian)傾心,婢(bi)女紅娘傳(chuan)書,幾經反(fan)復,兩人(ren)終于(yu)(yu)花好月圓。后來張(zhang)生(sheng)(sheng)(sheng)赴(fu)京應試未中,滯留京師(shi),與鶯(ying)(ying)(ying)(ying)(ying)(ying)鶯(ying)(ying)(ying)(ying)(ying)(ying)情書來往(wang),互贈信物以(yi)表(biao)深情。但張(zhang)生(sheng)(sheng)(sheng)終于(yu)(yu)變心,認為(wei)鶯(ying)(ying)(ying)(ying)(ying)(ying)鶯(ying)(ying)(ying)(ying)(ying)(ying)是天下(xia)之“尤物”,還搬出商紂,周幽王(wang)亡國的(de)例子(zi),證明自己“德不足以(yi)勝妖(yao)孽”,只好割愛。一(yi)年多(duo)后,鶯(ying)(ying)(ying)(ying)(ying)(ying)鶯(ying)(ying)(ying)(ying)(ying)(ying)另嫁,張(zhang)生(sheng)(sheng)(sheng)也另娶。一(yi)次張(zhang)生(sheng)(sheng)(sheng)路過(guo)鶯(ying)(ying)(ying)(ying)(ying)(ying)鶯(ying)(ying)(ying)(ying)(ying)(ying)家(jia)門(men),要(yao)求以(yi)“外兄”相見(jian),遭鶯(ying)(ying)(ying)(ying)(ying)(ying)鶯(ying)(ying)(ying)(ying)(ying)(ying)拒絕。數日后張(zhang)生(sheng)(sheng)(sheng)離去(qu),鶯(ying)(ying)(ying)(ying)(ying)(ying)鶯(ying)(ying)(ying)(ying)(ying)(ying)回(hui)詩(shi)決絕“棄(qi)置今何道,當時(shi)(shi)(shi)(shi)且(qie)自親。還將舊時(shi)(shi)(shi)(shi)意,憐取(qu)眼前人(ren)”。當時(shi)(shi)(shi)(shi)人(ren)們還稱(cheng)贊張(zhang)生(sheng)(sheng)(sheng)“始亂(luan)(luan)終棄(qi)”的(de)行(xing)為(wei)是“善于(yu)(yu)補(bu)過(guo)”。小說顯然是站在張(zhang)生(sheng)(sheng)(sheng)的(de)立場,美化(hua)張(zhang)生(sheng)(sheng)(sheng),為(wei)他的(de)薄幸行(xing)為(wei)辯護(hu)。

傳(chuan)(chuan)(chuan)奇小(xiao)說(shuo)名篇(pian)。元(yuan)稹撰,原題《傳(chuan)(chuan)(chuan)奇》,《異聞集(ji)》載(zai)此篇(pian),還保(bao)存原題,收(shou)(shou)入《太平廣(guang)記(ji)》488卷(juan),收(shou)(shou)錄時改作《鶯(ying)鶯(ying)傳(chuan)(chuan)(chuan)》,沿用至今(jin),又因(yin)傳(chuan)(chuan)(chuan)中有賦《會真詩》的內(nei)容(rong),俗亦(yi)稱(cheng)《會真記(ji)》。其篇(pian)末說(shuo):“貞(zhen)元(yuan)歲(sui)九(jiu)月,執事〔友〕李(li)公垂(李(li)紳(shen)(shen)字)宿于予靖(jing)安里第,語及于是,公垂卓然(ran)稱(cheng)異,遂為《鶯(ying)鶯(ying)歌(ge)》以傳(chuan)(chuan)(chuan)之。”今(jin)考出是貞(zhen)元(yuan)二十(shi)年(804年)九(jiu)月,元(yuan)稹將故事講給李(li)紳(shen)(shen)聽(ting),李(li)紳(shen)(shen)作《鶯(ying)鶯(ying)歌(ge)》,元(yuan)稹寫了這篇(pian)傳(chuan)(chuan)(chuan)奇。

《鶯(ying)鶯(ying)傳》于(yu)(yu)敘事中注意刻畫人物性格和(he)心理,較好地(di)塑造了(le)(le)(le)(le)崔鶯(ying)鶯(ying)的(de)形(xing)象。崔鶯(ying)鶯(ying)是一個在(zai)封建(jian)家庭的(de)嚴格閨訓中長大(da)的(de)少女。她(ta)有(you)(you)強烈的(de)愛(ai)情要求,但又(you)在(zai)內(nei)心隱藏得很(hen)深,甚至有(you)(you)時(shi)還會在(zai)表面上(shang)作出(chu)完全相反(fan)的(de)姿(zi)態。本來,通過她(ta)的(de)侍婢紅娘,張生(sheng)(sheng)與她(ta)已相互用詩(shi)表達(da)了(le)(le)(le)(le)愛(ai)情。可是,當張生(sheng)(sheng)按照她(ta)詩(shi)中的(de)約(yue)定(ding)前來相會時(shi),她(ta)卻又(you)“端(duan)服嚴容”,正言厲色地(di)數落(luo)了(le)(le)(le)(le)張生(sheng)(sheng)的(de)“非禮之動(dong)(dong)”。數日(ri)后,當張生(sheng)(sheng)已陷于(yu)(yu)絕(jue)望時(shi),她(ta)忽(hu)然(ran)又(you)采(cai)取大(da)膽(dan)的(de)叛逆(ni)行動(dong)(dong),主動(dong)(dong)夜奔(ben)張生(sheng)(sheng)住所幽(you)會,“曩(nang)時(shi)端(duan)莊(zhuang),不(bu)(bu)復(fu)同(tong)矣”。崔鶯(ying)鶯(ying)的(de)這(zhe)(zhe)種(zhong)矛盾和(he)反(fan)復(fu),真實地(di)反(fan)映了(le)(le)(le)(le)她(ta)克(ke)服猶豫、動(dong)(dong)搖而終(zhong)于(yu)(yu)背叛封建(jian)禮教的(de)曲折(zhe)過程。但是,她(ta)在(zai)思(si)想(xiang)上(shang)又(you)始(shi)(shi)終(zhong)未(wei)能(neng)徹底擺脫社會、出(chu)身、教養所加給她(ta)的(de)精神(shen)(shen)桎梏。她(ta)仍然(ran)認為私自戀愛(ai)結合是不(bu)(bu)合法的(de),“始(shi)(shi)亂之,終(zhong)棄(qi)之,固(gu)其(qi)宜(yi)矣,愚不(bu)(bu)敢恨”。因而在(zai)她(ta)遭到遺(yi)棄(qi)以后,就只能(neng)自怨自艾,聽從(cong)命運(yun)的(de)擺布(bu)。這(zhe)(zhe)又(you)表現了(le)(le)(le)(le)她(ta)思(si)想(xiang)性格中軟(ruan)弱的(de)一面。作品中對這(zhe)(zhe)一形(xing)象的(de)刻畫,傳神(shen)(shen)寫態,有(you)(you)血有(you)(you)肉,異常鮮明。

作(zuo)者為(wei)了(le)替張(zhang)生遺棄崔(cui)鶯鶯的無恥行徑辯解開脫,竟藉其(qi)(qi)口大罵崔(cui)鶯鶯為(wei)“尤物(wu)”﹑“妖(yao)孽”﹑“不(bu)妖(yao)其(qi)(qi)身﹐必妖(yao)于人”,這就不(bu)僅(jin)使得人物(wu)形像前(qian)后不(bu)統一,也造成(cheng)了(le)主(zhu)題(ti)思想的矛盾。誠(cheng)如魯迅《中國小說(shuo)史略》所說(shuo):“篇(pian)末文(wen)過飾非,遂墮惡(e)(e)趣。”盡管(guan)如此,讀(du)者從作(zuo)品的具體描述中卻仍然感(gan)到崔(cui)鶯鶯令(ling)人同情(qing),而張(zhang)生的負(fu)心,則令(ling)人憎(zeng)惡(e)(e)。應該(gai)說(shuo)作(zuo)品的客觀(guan)藝術效(xiao)果與作(zuo)者的主(zhu)觀(guan)議論評價是截然相反的。

前(qian)語之(zhi)(zhi)(zhi),后(hou)前(qian)不一,文過非(fei)飾(shi),余有(you)異,敢敘一二。本自(zi)非(fei)正(zheng),乃歸(gui)正(zheng)之(zhi)(zhi)(zhi),人道(dao)張生無情(qing),始亂終棄(qi)。姻緣之(zhi)(zhi)(zhi)理(li),父母之(zhi)(zhi)(zhi)命,媒(mei)(mei)(mei)妁之(zhi)(zhi)(zhi)言(yan)。父母之(zhi)(zhi)(zhi)命者(zhe)(zhe),夫(fu)婦(fu)之(zhi)(zhi)(zhi)道(dao),崇敬之(zhi)(zhi)(zhi),不敢以私(si)心(xin)(xin)害法(fa),媒(mei)(mei)(mei)妁之(zhi)(zhi)(zhi)言(yan),該無偏,以示明正(zheng)。故(gu)有(you)八抬大轎,明媒(mei)(mei)(mei)正(zheng)娶之(zhi)(zhi)(zhi)意。兩者(zhe)(zhe)之(zhi)(zhi)(zhi)緣,本自(zi)私(si)心(xin)(xin),何敢正(zheng)堂。且后(hou)以外兄見之(zhi)(zhi)(zhi),女以否。何故(gu)?蓋怨(yuan)念(nian)之(zhi)(zhi)(zhi)隨。后(hou)者(zhe)(zhe)當之(zhi)(zhi)(zhi),妻為正(zheng),獨尊,勢比(bi)陰陽(yang)。妾(qie),以美色私(si)意財貨(huo)稱之(zhi)(zhi)(zhi)。兩者(zhe)(zhe)焉能并取。諸輩(bei)以情(qing)愛為夫(fu)妻之(zhi)(zhi)(zhi)本,隨今,男(nan)女之(zhi)(zhi)(zhi)道(dao)不尊,私(si)意比(bi)離(li),天(tian)下彌亂。庭不正(zheng),與天(tian)下純然,可乎!
